About the Author
Eugene Hecht is a member of the Physics Department of Adelphi Unversity in New York. He has authored eight books.

FREDERICK BUECHE received his Ph.D. from Cornell University and is a Distinguished Professor at Large at the University of Dayton.

EUGENE HECHT has authored nine books including Optics, published by Addison Wesley, which has been the leading text in the field for several decades. He has also written Schaum's Outline of Optics and co-authored Schaum's Outline of Quantum Mechanics.

About the Author

Jillian Venters was a fairly spooky and morbid child. When she discovered the existence of the whole Gothic sub-culture, she clapped her hands with glee and fell upon it like a babybat upon a box of Count Chocula cereal. Jillian Venters (the Lady of the Manors) presents her case for the gothic subculture in her most elegant fashion. Her book is not only entertaining and fun to read, but it is also very informative and gives the reader new and insightful information about this beloved subculture that I, a goth myself, wasn't aware of. Thank you, Lady of the Manors, for writing such a beautifully articulated book. I hope people can get their hands on this and learn what goth is and what goth isn't. Our subculture has gotten so much bad rep throughout the years and the Lady of the Manors is here to get things put straight.

I bought this book some time ago, after following Auntie Jill's blog for many years. Although I wasn't raised in an area where I knew many other goths, Jillian's writing style held my attention and educated me on the origins of the subculture. It helped me appreciate more than the fashion and general spookiness, which is what drew me to goth in the first place as a baby bat in high school.The most helpful aspect of this book, though, was the encouragement Jillian gives to embracing the cliches. Incorporating what elements of goth suit a person, and not feel like a "lesser" goth when admitting some aspects aren't for you. Greatest of all, she teaches how to be polite when faced with negative opinions and comments. Without sacrificing your own self worth and identity.I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a part of the goth subculture- whether that be yourself, a friend, or a family member. It makes the perfect gift for anyone of any age.

Gothic Charm School by Jillian Venters is a collection of the amassed wisdom of the type that she dispenses on her blog, decorated with lovely illustrations by her husband. The Lady of the Manners, as she refers to herself, speaks in a charming style throughout the book (notable for her frequent use of the third person). Subtitled “An Essential Guide for Goths and Those Who Love Them,” Gothic Charm School is directed at a wide audience–both goths themselves and those outside the subculture who want to learn more about it. Absolutely fantabulous book! (Yes, I just used the made-up word "fantabulous.") If you are looking at this book, go ahead and stop looking and either buy it or borrow a copy and start reading. I personally think that this book should be on the (non-existent) Required Reading list of every young person, whether they be Goth or otherwise.Ah Jillian, where were you when I was a "babybat" in high school? Had I read this book in high school (it was published after my high school years), I believe my teen years would have been worlds easier and more enjoyable. Those were the years I vehemently denied that I was a "Goth," feeling that I was above labels (as were my fellow students, friend and foe alike) because they always carried derogatory connotations. Now, having read this book in my 20s, I found myself nodding my head in agreement with The Lady of Manners on many subjects, if not all, but particularly during her section about labels and those who are labeled "Goth" but deny they are, because they do not want to be associated with labels at all (or for whatever other reason they may have).I could sing the praises of this book for hours, I'm sure, but I'll wrap this up by saying you should read this book. No matter who are, what scene/clique/sub-culture, etc., you tend to associate yourself with, and no matter your age, I truly believe anyone could benefit from this book in some way.

Wonderful addition to my book collection. I've had a lot of questions about the Goth subculture, and this book answered a lot of questions I had. Whether you're a prospective bat baby(a new goth), a concerned parent, an Elder Goth( a long-time member of the subculture), or a curious person there's a lot to learn. The author has an easygoing style that everyone can understand and there are laughs to be had as well.

Julie Venters is amazing when it comes to explaining the Gothic culture to goths, babybats, and non-goths. Teaches how to properly respond to bullying and harassment, how to politely explain to friends and family why you are goth, how parents can have Goth children and not panic about it.... Oh, I could go on for DAYS!Perfect for anyone - even if you aren't Gothic.

This book is helpful for goths and non-goths alike. While the Lady of Manners does present some highly valuable information and advice for those who have embraced the goth lifestyle, her tips for etiquette can be applied to everyone. The title does not lie: the book spends a fair amount of time explaining aspects of the subculture for people who are not a part of it. I think every parent should pick up chapter 3 for a read. If you're looking for a handbook on how to be goth -you are wasting your time because there are no set rules. Pick up this book instead of something that claims to be gothier than thou. The Lady of Manners is fair and does not point an accusatory finger. Instead, she points you in the direction that will probably end up benefiting you the most -good manners. She does offer advice and recommendations for fashion, music, books, romance, and socializing. There is also a very important chapter covering something that every goth probably goes through: the misunderstanding of others regarding the lifestyle they (the goth) have chosen. Overall, this book is worth a read for anyone who is interested in, or is a part of the subculture.

Douglas Van Dorn (M.Div. Denver Seminary) is the author of Waters of Creation: A Biblical Theology of Baptism, Galatians: A Supernatural Justification, Giants: Sons of the Gods, and Covenant Theology: A Reformed Baptist Primer. He has pastored the Reformed Baptist Church of Northern Colorado since 2002. He co-hosted the radio show Journey's End in 2011-12. He is a member of the Association of Reformed Baptist Churches of America and has served on its Administrative Council. He has been married to his extraordinary and beautiful wife Janelle since 1994. They have been blessed with four amazing girls and One gracious and loving God. He has climbed all 54 of Colorado's 14,000 ft. mountains and also Mt. Rainier in Washington and Mt.
