About the Author

Ramesh Gulati is currently Asset Management and Reliability Planning Manager with the Aerospace Testing Alliance at Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC), Arnold AFB, TN. He is responsible for creating a reliability culture across AEDC and for building and designing reliability into new systems. Previously, he held various maintenance, engineering, and management positions at AEDC, Carrier Air Conditioning Corp., True Temper Corp., Bethlehem Steel, and Heavy Engineering Corporation’s Foundry Forge Plant.

 

Ramesh is a Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP), Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE), and a registered Professional Engineer (PE). He holds BSME, MSIE, and MBA degrees, is very active in professional societies and has authored many professional papers. Currently, for SMRP, he serves as Certification Committee chair and was director of Certification and Standards, Best Practices, Body of Knowledge, and a Board member. He also serves as an advisory Board member for the University of Tennessee’s Reliability & Maintenance Center (RMC). He is a member of Association of Maintenance Professionals (AMP) and a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIE). I first met Ramesh when we were both volunteering at a Society of Maintenance & Reliability Professionals executive board meeting. The first thing I noticed was his intensity.

 

He was intensely interested in contributing what he knew to the best practices being collected by the organization. He was intensely working to connect people who might be able to help each other. He was interested in making sure those around him were not simply passively supportive of a reliability-based maintenance strategy. They had to be fully committed to a reliability-based way of life!

 

I eventually made it to the Air Force base where Ramesh worked, and I noticed something completely different about the way maintenance was regarded. I could not detect the usual sense of maintenance as a "necessary evil" or a "cost center," even from the base's leadership. Instead, maintenance was viewed as an important enabler of the mission. Reliability was the context and aim of the maintenance program.

 

Since that day almost ten years ago, I have been privileged to work with Ramesh, who taught me that one can only gain through contributing. I've also learned from his entire team, including a series of leaders over the last decade that represent the best of what America is all about.

 

There is a common thread I have found from all the best practice programs like the one where Ramesh works. That is the thread of sharing. You would expect best practice organizations to be learning organizations, like knowledge sponges absorbing every bit of beneficial information they can find. Instead, it is almost the exact opposite. These organizations share and teach everything they know and everything they have learned; somehow this contributes to their getting better and improving even more.

 

Before this book appeared, only those who worked and volunteered with Ramesh or those who heard him at an industry conference, had been touched by his work. With this book, and now this new edition, the wider world will have a chance to benefit from his experience and knowledge.

 

If you are a maintenance professional, dive in and savor this book. Try not to make too many dog-eared pages because I suggest that you lend it to your boss as soon as you are done with it or, better yet, buy him or her a copy. In addition there are now "assessment" questions at the end of each chapter to test how well you absorbed the material. This is one of the first books to discuss the asset-management-related standards -- including the new "ISO-55000 Asset Management Standard," which Ramesh has been developing with a global team from 24 nations. Other new material includes corrosion control, risk management and operator-driven reliability.

 

This award-winning book has become one of the de facto standards for those preparing to sit for maintenance-reliability professional exams. It is also used in college-level courses throughout the world.

Chapter 1.3 What Do Best Practices Have to Do with Maintenance and Reliability?

 

In any organization, assets are needed to produce products or provide services. An item or asset, as defined here, could be an electronic or mechanical hardware component or device, a software product, or a manufacturing system or process. The objective of performing better maintenance and improving reliability of assets in an organization is to ensure that the assets are available to perform required functions, when needed, in a cost-effective manner. The performance of an asset is based on three factors (see Figure 1.1):

 

Inherent reliability — how it was designed?

Operating environment — how it will be operated?

Maintenance plan — how it will be maintained?

 

Usually assets are designed with a certain level of reliability. This designed-in (or built-in) reliability is the result of individual components’ reliability and the way they are configured. This level of reliability is called inherent reliability. We cannot change or improve the reliability of an asset after it has been installed without replacing or modifying it with better and improved components (with the exception of redesigning it).

 

The second factor, the operating environment of the asset, considers operating conditions under which the asset has to operate along with the operator’s skills. Several studies have indicated that 40% or more failures are the result of operational errors. Organizations need to ensure that operators are appropriately educated and trained in operating these assets without causing operational errors that lead to failures. In fact, operators should be the first line of defense in monitoring the asset’s performance and any abnormal conditions, and in initiating timely corrective actions.

 

The third factor is a maintenance plan that defines how the asset will be maintained. The objective of a good maintenance plan is to sustain asset reliability and to improve its availability. The plan should include the necessary maintenance and service-type actions needed to detect potential failures before they lead to unscheduled downtime.

 

So what do best practices have to do with these principles of maintenance and reliability? Throughout the many years of the maintenance and reliability industry, good and bad practices have been identified. These good and bad practices have been briefed at international conferences, discussed in person and over the airwaves, and written in magazines, books, websites, and blogs. The best of these practices are now becoming more accepted and published throughout local, national, and international industries, becoming the benchmarks that companies seek to achieve. Throughout this book, we will be discussing these factors and what best practices can be used to improve asset performance.

About the Author

Kenneth Townsend earned his Ph.D. in American History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1991, two years after joining the faculty of the Department of History at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Townsend now serves as chair of the Department of History. He is the author of World War II and the American Indian (2000), South Carolina (2008) and varied articles, and he is revising a book-length manuscript addressing the World War II home front in the Southeastern United States. In summer 2006 Townsend embedded with U.S. Army units in Kabul and Kandahar, Afghanistan and is now
completing a project titled “Shadows of War” that examines the personal imprint of war on soldiers and their families.

Mark A. Nicholas received his PhD from Lehigh University in 2006, and teaches at Florida Atlantic University.  With Joel W. Martin, he edited Native Americans, Christianity, and the Reshaping of the American Religious Landscape (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2010). This is the 3rd book in the Matt Royal series, following “Murder Key,” and I do not consider it a standalone. The backstories of each major player are already in place and are only barely touched upon in this novel. Also, Matt Royal’s emotional make-up was heavily developed in the first two novels and that knowledge is essential to this story line.The story opens about 6 months after the conclusion of the previous novel. Matt is visiting at a friend’s animal rescue preserve when he finds a male’s mutilated body in the vulture pit. A day later, his ex-wife of 10 years, Laura, comes in from Atlanta asking Matt for his help in locating her stepdaughter. This stepdaughter, a college dropout and recreational druggie, was last seen in Matt’s town of Longboat Key, Florida, and has not been heard from in several weeks.It takes less than a day for Matt and Logan Hamilton to get a lead on the girl, question the lead and get shot at on the way home. Two more leads, two more attempts on their lives, and a death at each scene gives Matt the idea that they are on to something far more problematic than a teenage runaway. And then Laura goes missing, also.Before the story is finished, the clues and bodies will lead Matt, Logan and Jock Algren from Longboat Key to Sarasota to Tampa to Key West and to Blood Island. Those same leads and bodies will wind the team and the reader through seedy bars, religious cults, whorehouses (sorry – upscale massage spas) and a cartel kingpin’s home.In fact, that most helpful cartel kingpin and his minions provide a serious contrast in this story. They are physically fit, of course, and are definitely serious players in the drug world. But, for them, it is just a business, not a psychosis or an addiction, and they are the most intelligent, the most respectful and the least caricature-like gangsters I have experienced in my reading for a while. In fact, by the end of the story, the phrase “Hold, please.” will probably never mean the same thing to you again.Griffin tells a fine tale and, for the most part, he weaves a logical story. It is clear that he has researched and plotted the scenes carefully, eliminating illogical and unreasonable steps in the action sequences. And Griffin writes action scenes that rely on planning, adrenaline, reflex and muscle memory instead of coincidence and alpha tendencies. He allows Matt to make mistakes, but he has Matt acknowledge and process those mistakes and their consequences. He has Matt acknowledge and fight fear, the fear of being killed and the fear that he will never see Laura alive again. Just as importantly, Griffin makes sure that all is explained in the end, how everyone and everything ties together.As much as I enjoyed the book, Griffin appears to have a harder time with weaving personal plot threads than with setting up action threads. And two instances of this caused me to downgrade my rating. First, there is absolutely no mention of Matt’s girlfriend from the first two books, Anne Dubose, a relationship that was still present, if a bit tenuous, at the end of the last novel. There were several golden opportunities for this relationship to be mentioned. But it wasn’t and its absence is glaring in the light of the content of several of Matt’s internal monologues concerning Laura.Secondly, the author’s set-up of the “Laura” storyline fails the basic tenets of plausibility. Now the original information is fine - Laura meets with Matt but goes missing two days later, leaving ID and phone at home. Since the stepdaughter is also missing, the reader is led to believe there might be a connection. But as the novel progresses, things that Griffin writes about her disappearance just don’t add up logically, not the police response or the actions of the husband, who is a doctor.And when she is found in a hospital several days later, dying of a virulent and terminal disease that she has told no one about, the plausibility factor hits zero. First, Griffin’s initial physical description of her specifically portrays beauty, strength and agility with no evidence of any illness, let alone a terminal one. And secondly, Griffin makes it seem as if her husband, a doctor, had no clue she was even tired, let alone terminally ill. Then when she dramatically re-surfaces from a coma, makes her peace with all and dies a day later, my suspension of disbelief just leaped right over the proverbial cliff.Plausibly written or not, I feel that I know why Griffin needed the “Laura” story and the “Anne” non-existence. I think he wanted an intense emotional shove to couple with the violence that Matt had to resort to so that Matt could grow in the series. And I quote:“I did what was necessary, and I know I would do it again…I didn’t think I’d ever have the same benign view of myself again. It was like losing a close friend. The Matt Royal I knew, the fun-loving beach bum lawyer, had died over the past few days, and had been replaced by a monster who was perfectly willing to shoot and stab people. I wondered if I’d ever find my old self again. I was glad Laura would never have to know this new version of the man she’d loved when she was young.”

When I started reading this book I felt immediately drawn to the story. In fact it begins with the discovery of a corpse on a beach. What better start to a novel of this genre?Unfortunately, the initial impression often deceives.The plot has as its protagonist a retired lawyer, Matt Royal, who apparently returns to other books in the series (this is the third one), who is involved in a strange case that has to do with the daughter of his ex-wife.The first thing I noticed was the hasty pace of the author in presenting the scenes, where he makes frequent use of dialogues, even telephone dialogues, during which it's not clear what the characters are doing. Such use becomes, as you proceed with the story, almost excessive. Most discoveries come from the many phone calls made by the protagonist to the other characters, including a woman (I cannot remember her name) who is able to retrieve any information with his computer (like Garcia in Criminal Minds).This way of structuring the story greatly limits the ability to imagine events and more than once I admit I was tempted to abandon the book.Unfortunately, however, it isn’t the only problem. It’s the plot to be highly unlikely. The author has put together a religious sect, prostitution, and terrorism. And the three elements are correlated with unconvincing explanations, aside from the usual madness of the typical villain.To all this you add the action scenes in which the protagonist gets too easily all the support he needs from various law enforcements, just like he is in charge, and he is free to kill other characters without this having any consequence, as if it were normal.I love action stories, like the movies with Vin Diesel or Bruce Willis or even dear old Jean-Claude Van Damme, but this book hasn’t really convinced me.Rita Carla Francesca Monticelli, author of Red Desert - Point of No Return

I was perusing the kindle pages when I came across Blood Island. It is possible that this book was the "kindle daily deal" or something of that nature because I won't pay $8+ (kindle price at this writing) for an author I am not familiar with. Needless to say I got a bargain because this book grabbed me almost immediately. Matt Royal is instantly likeable and is somewhat of a cross between Doc Ford and Travis McGee as other reviewers have suggested (more Doc than Travis, I think). Royal doesn't hesitate to use violence when needed but regrets its necessity and struggles with what he has to do. I think this makes him more real than the Superman type characters we sometimes read about.In this story he is looking for the ex-wives step-daughter, who seems to have fallen off the grid after Spring Break. As Matt back tracks her movements, he gets more and more concerned with her situation and finally ends up in Key West looking for a place called Blood Island. A privately owned island run by a religious zealot. Royal has help along the way from old friends and even some new ones as he continues his search. This story well written and doesn't drag anywhere. It holds together from scene to scene and keeps you wanting more. It would make a great film, if you could put the right cast together.Five enthusiastic stars for H. Terrell Griffin and Matt Royal. You can bet I'll be on the lookout for more

Wow. I'll start by saying I took voice lessons in music school as a secondary instrument (piano was my primary). I had a great teacher (she actually taught Vanessa Williams and some opera singers), but the way music schools are set up--learn 2-3 pieces for juries, repeat each semester--didn't leave a lot of room/time for learning technique. My personality type demands details and clear step by step instructions for learning. Enter Raise Your Voice. I can't believe how much detail Jaime packs into this book, not to mention the additional audio files and access to the RYV message board. This book covers everything from breathing, to proper vocal health/ care and even mind/body technique to help with stage fright. This isn't a new technique/ method, but is based on the Bel Canto method...it's just explained in a very clear and easy to understand way. Here is what I have gained as a singer from this book:-Greater range in both directions (Db2 up to Ab5). The isolation exercises did the trick-No more pain or discomfort in my tongue or throat, because of the warm up and cool down exercises-Natural remedies to soothe my cords and keep them in good health.-Better breathing technique...something that was a mystery in college.-Ease of singing higher worship songs in church.-My first opportunity to sing the national anthem at a sporting event at my alma mater-Knowledge of how diet affects the voice.-New exercise routines perfect for busy musiciansTHESE are all the things I desired in college, but could never dig into with my teacher, b/c of preparation for juries. This book is a labor of love by Jaime for all aspiring singers out there. Jaime is very holistic in his approach. If you're not a rock or metal singer (I'm not), this book is still for you. It will help with any style of singing as it is based in classing methodology. And for only $30, you can't go wrong. You can't even get a half-hour voice lesson for that much!!I am now a student in Jaime's Vendera Vocal Academy (VVA), where this is one of the books we use in the VOX 101 classes. I'm very grateful to him for writing this book. I don't know where I would be vocally, if someone hadn't taken the time to lay everything out so well, for detail-oriented folks like me. It's been years since I've read the book, but I love the exercises that come with it. I've taken voice lessons for years and I've never really like warming up or doing vocal exercises until this book. He has a lot of creative exercises that are fun to do like the Chewbacca one and witch's cackle. Even if you aren't a metal singer (and I'm definitely not) it's a lot of fun to make all sorts of different sounds with your voice and explore what it can do.

I bought this for my husband, he is incedibly musical but has never been a great singer. He says:BUY THIS AMAZING BOOK!I'd rate it ten stars out of five if I could.I never thought I could be a good singer, but Jaime proved me wrong and showed me the way. In less than a month, by practicing the methods he makes so accessible and easy to understand...The notes I could hit (especially high ones) sound a lot better.I can hold notes longer.The break in my voice has all but disappeared.I can hit notes that, for years, I never could. Seven semi-tones higher, and two semi-tones lower. This guy knows his stuff but what is really awesome is how available this guy is to his readers. No joke. He has a web site set up that you can join which has all sorts of extra stuff, a forum, and other tidbits... for free with the purchase of his book. Unlike most other authors or specialists, when you address him, he writes you back. This guy must live at his keyboard... he's that diligent. Also, for touring vocalists, this book is a must. He has all sorts of methods for keeping your voice in tip top shape that I haven't seen discussed anywhere else. For those of you who are hardcore/metal vocalists, I highly suggest buying this, his diaphragm workout book, and The Zen of Screaming for the warm ups it provides.Great book, great guy!

This book has been a huge help to me. I am professional singer who was recently diagnosed with pre-nodules (which I have since reversed). This book is loaded with valuable information. It's got extensive info on interesting ways to promote vocal health and hygiene (streamers, vocal sprays, natural remedies etc). The vocal exercises are excellent for growing your voice and for strengthening muscle coordination in your vocal cords. I constantly find myself referring back to this book. Big bonus- buying the book gains you access to his website, where you can download all kinds of vocal exercises for free. Oh, and he includes loads of articles written by other singers and singing coaches that are VERY informative, and also can lead you to research their work further if you so desire. HIGHLY recommended.

WOW!!!!!!! I've been using singing success for weeks, but one day of this is 10x better and way more informative. The price difference has me convinced that I got robbed. Singing success is okay I'm on the fourth or fifth CD and I use it 6 out of 7 days a week. When I'm done with singing success I'm going to use this more consistently.
